IAFF Local 237 had an active member line of duty death this year. Captain Jon Enander passed away April 28, 2013. Numerous Uniformed members from across the province attended the line of duty service on May 4, 2013.
Lethbridge Fire Department Honor Guard, Pipes and Drums Band and members of IAFF Local 237 accompanied Jon Enander’s Family to the Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial in Colorado Springs. Captain Jon Enander’s name along with 156 other Brother and Sisters were added to the wall at this year’s Memorial.
Our Collective agreement expired in June of 2012. We established our bargaining team and had several negotiation meetings throughout the year. We anticipate signing a new agreement in 2014.
IAFF Local 237 hosted the Alberta Fire Fighters Convention in May. Fire Fighters from 17 communities across Alberta met to discuss Fire Fighting and EMS issues in Alberta
AFFA Fall Meeting: AFFA Members met in Edmonton to discuss Alberta Fire Fighter and EMS issues. We also met with several of the Alberta Fire Chiefs and had good discussions on PTSD.
The Alberta Fire Fighters formed a Pension Task force to address upcoming proposed Pension changes.
This Task force met with the government to express concerns and solutions to Pension issues
Members of the Executive also attended Interest arbitrations hearings in Medicine Hat, Calgary, and Edmonton
Educational Symposiums and conferences that IAFF Local 237 attended were:
IAFF Canadian Legislative Conference. This conference gives Canadian fire fighters a chance to meet and discuss key legislative issues and to conduct lobby meetings with our members of Parliament and senators.
IAFF Western Canadian Conference. We attended this year’s Western Conference held in Edmonton. This Conference keeps Western Canadian IAFF locals updated on their local issues.
IAFF Redmond Symposium and EMS Conference.
The IAFF and the John P. Redmond Foundation have been on the frontline of every major health and safety initiative in the fire service. The IAFF Redmond Symposium reflects our commitment to explore the cause of every IAFF member’s death, injury or illness and address solutions to further protect our membership.
In 2013 three members from the local attended this symposium in Denver Colorado. One of the keynote speakers was retired US Army Four – Star General Barry McCaffrey. General McCaffrey addressed the delegates on leadership and the importance of taking care of your well being.
Key topics at this year’s Symposium were Fire Fighters and Paramedics responding under fire, Response to Mass Causality events and NIST Field experiments on Fire Behavior and Tactical Considerations
